In 2012 we surveyed our members and found that families affected by Autism were in need of support. The staff at the French Creek Family YMCA answered the call with the development of our own Autism Support Group, the only group of its kind on the west side of Cleveland. This peer-led group meets the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. and is open to members of both the YMCA and community. Topics discussed include tips from other families and guest speakers who specialize in related fields. The meetings are free and suggestions are welcome. For more information contact the French Creek Family YMCA at 440-934-9622.
University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center, the city of Warrensville Heights, and the Warrensville Heights Family YMCA joined forces to promote health and wellness throughout the Warrensville Heights community during a free Family Fun and Fitness Fair March 16.
The event drew 500 visitors from the community, and was such a success, another like event is being planned for June.
“We’re partnering with the UH Ahuja Medical Center and the city (of Warrensville Heights) to do a 5K (run) in June that will culminate in an outdoor health fair,” said Warrensville Heights Family YMCA Health and Wellness Director Tanner Gilbert.
The community event included activities for children and adults including YMCA Youth Movement demonstrations, a bounce house, games, crafts, health screenings, cooking demonstrations, Tai Chi, and Zumba demonstrations, chair massages, prizes and games and crafts.
