The best time to start teaching these lessons to children is when they’re young, before unhealthy choices become hard-to-break bad habits. Children learn by example so one of the easiest ways is to show them is by making healthy habits yourself. It’s all about practicing what you’re preaching. Most of us know telling your kids to do something doesn’t always work, so it’s best to have them see you do it yourself.
Here are a few ways to help kids make better food choices and focus on healthy eating:
1. Breakfast is best
-Turns out, your parents were right when they told you breakfast is the most important meal of the day. There’s good reason behind it, too. Students who eat a well-balanced breakfast have healthier body weights and improved ability to learn and focus at school.
2. Natural sugar > Processed sugar
Kid’s go-to for sugar usually involves some type of candy or sugar-filled “juice”. They might satisfy their sweet-tooth, but also come with health problems. The sugar sticks to their teeth, meaning more cavities. And the refined sugar really packs on the pounds, if eaten in excess. If you want to give them something healthier, but just as sweet, try some fruit. It may have sugar in it, but it’s completely natural and a way better option than processed sugar.
3. Eat in, not out
One of the easiest ways to show your kids how to eat healthy is to cook your meals at home. Fast food may seem like the easier and cheaper option, but it can have detrimental effects on the health of you and your family. Cooking can be a great hobby and at the same time teaches your child how to make healthy food for themselves. You can even let them pick recipes and go to the grocery store with you! You can’t beat family bonding time!
